Motivation The Reason For On Acting A Particular Way.
Motivation : The reason for on acting a particular way. Alone and for the right reason motivation can be an extremely powerful tool for success and well-being. Yet, what is it that provokes motivation ? Many studies have been conclusive to culture and religion being an enormous trigger to motivation. Why is that exactly? To answer this question one should examine what hinders motivation. Many young people suffer from identity and social issues, such as not truly knowing who they are, anxiety and questioning of their morals. Even though religions differ, it enables one to realize who they truly are, reduce anxiety and creates lifelong morals. In this ever changing world what does one hold on to, ensuring they do not disappear withâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦On the basis of Stace s conceptualization, Hood (1975) developed the Mysticism Scale (M-Scale) to measure these eight phenomenological characteristics of religious experienceâ⬠( Lazar, Aryeh. ââ¬Å"Cultural In fluences on Religious Experience and Motivation.â⬠) All of theses qualities or experiences are vital to identifying oneself. Looking closer into the study it suggest that having an insight on your religion and culture creates a less introverted person and more willing to adventure and explore along with being uninfluenced by others opinions. They even gathered real life testimonials to back up their study. ââ¬Å" Factor analysis of the M-Scale has uncovered a three-factor solution (Hood et al. 1993). Hood et al. identified the first factor of their three-factor solution with Stace s (1960) extrovertive mysticism, defined as the experience of unity with all and containing two qualities: unity in diversity (e.g., I have had an experience in which I realized the oneness of myself with all things) and inner subjectivity (e.g., I have had an experience in which all things seemed to be conscious). The second factor was identified with Stace s introvertive mysticism, defined as an experience of self-loss, contained the following three qualities: unity of ego (e.g., I have had an experience inShow MoreRelatedKants Views on Morality949 Words à |à 4 Pagesthat the reason for doing a particular action or the drive to do good things is a fundamental basis of defining moral quality in a person. Plan of Launching a New App
Question: Explain aboutbusiness plan of launching a new app namely Grab-a-Nurse. Answer: This report discusses about a new business idea or business plan of launching a new app namely Grab-a-Nurse. During this report, a detailed analysis is made on the industry as well as target market of the company. Along with that, the report also analyzes and evaluates the business plan in respect to the financial and technical feasibility. However, at the end of the report, an overall conclusion is provided based on the findings of the study. Elements of self-analysis The success of a business depends on the ideology and vision of the entrepreneurs. The behavior of the entrepreneur towards its customers, employees, suppliers, management and other stakeholders decides whether the business will sustain not (Bryman and Bell 2015). According to the entrepreneur behavior theory, there are three types of requirements for the human capital and those are venture specific human capital, general human capital and entrepreneurship specific human capital. Status of these three types of human capital in respect to the entrepreneur of this new business is stated below: Elements Levels Venture specific human capital Knowledge and skills in the specific business area. High Skill of motivating others Moderate General human capital Educational background High Managerial capacity High Entrepreneurship specific human capital Entrepreneurial capacity Moderate Attitude towards business High Product / service The new business idea of Grab-a-Nurse is basically a service that will be provided to the sick people those will require the nursing service by Tech Nursing, a new nursing service provider in Singapore. This will be actually an application that the people can install in their mobile or Smartphones. All types of nursing services like, change of dressing or some in-home care will be available through this application. Description of the proposed venture The proposed venture of Tech Nursing will be first launched in Singapore. This indicates that the facility of Grab-a-Nurse app will be available to the people of Singapore in the very beginning. The main influencer behind this new idea of business includes time and cost savings of the sick people. The business will be a partnership business and the entrepreneurs have planned to make aware the people in Singapore about this new app through social media and mobile marketing. As the idea of this app is much unique and helpful to the people, it is expected that the application will grab the attention of the people. The installation charge of the product will be less because the target customer of the business will be the people of all social classes. The mission, vision and objectives of the business will be as under: Objectives: Grab the attention of 90% people in Singapore within the first 12 months after launching the business. Earn minimum 10% profit to run the business successfully. Make the application easily available in the market. Buying intension survey In order to know the scope of the business in the current market, the entrepreneurs of Tech Nursing have conducted a survey with the 90 people in Singapore. The findings of the survey are stated in the appendix. As per the survey with the people in Singapore, most of the participants belong to the age groups between 30 to 40 years and more than 40 years. Most of them are comfortable with technology and they are very much willing to avail the service like Grab-a-Nurse. Target Market Market research: In order to know the future prospect of the business, it is very important to conduct a market research (Hair et al. 2015). With the help of the market research, the entrepreneurs of Tech Nursing will know the actual demand of the people in Singapore. For this particular business of Grab-a-Nurse app, the entrepreneurs have used the 4Ps tool of marketing. The entrepreneurs found out the followings: 4Ps Findings Product In the market of Singapore, most of the people are technology friendly and so the demand for any new application is high. However, the product or app must be easily accessible and fast to serve in any urgent situation. Price The people in Singapore are ready to pay a standard amount of money in order to get quality service at their homes (Peroni et al. 2016). However, in order to provide the facility to the middle and lower social classes of people, the price level must be within affordable standard. Place As the service is application oriented, it will be better to make the application available in Google Play store, App Store and Microsoft Store. Promotion Most of the people in Singapore use the social networking sites. Therefore, it will be feasible enough if the promotion of Grab-a-Nurse is one through social networking sites. At the same time, the company needs to give television advertisement in order make older people aware about the product Therefore, from the above analysis, it can be said that there is a good scope for the app Grab-a-Nurse. As the service or application is related to human health, there is more chance to catch the market effectively. However, the price must be affordable to all social classes and proper channels must be chosen to aware the people of all age groups. Industry analysis: Industry analysis is one of the most important tasks needed to be done before entering into a new market (Zhou and Liu 2015). In case of the new application Grab-a-Nurse of Tech Nursing, the industry analysis can be done with the help of the Porters Five Forces analysis. The analysis is shown below: Five Forces Findings Industry Rivalry As the new app Grab-a-Nurse will be made in order to provide nursing services, the business is under the nursing industry of Singapore. However, as the service will be available just through a mobile application, this will be unique and in Singapore this kind of services is not widely available (DeMartino and Barbato 2015). On the other side, there are many good organizations available in Singapore which provides better services at lower cost. Therefore, from these points of views, it can be said the industry rivalry will be moderate. Threat of new entrants The threat of new entrants in this similar type of business is low because it is still not guaranteed that this will be successful (Schlaegel et al. 2015). So, for first three to five years the threat of new entrants will be low. However, if the business gets success then more organizations may come to similar business and then this threat may increase. Threat of substitute product The threat of substitute product will be high because there are many hospitals and nursing homes available in Singapore that provide better services at an affordable price range. At the same time, they also provide services on time. Bargaining power of suppliers Bargaining power of the suppliers will be low because there are many nurses available in Singapore who are ready to provide such services to the people. Bargaining power of the buyers The bargaining power of the customer will be moderate because this service is related to the health and the prices of such services are generally fixed. However, as there are some poor people, the companies sometimes need to lower the price. Therefore, the bargaining power of the customers will be moderate. Therefore, from this five forces analysis, it can be said that the industry situation is good for the new business. However, the new venture needs to maintain the time and price factors in order to get a good market share. At the same time, the new venture needs to maintain the service quality also. Technical feasibility analysis As the new business of Grab-a-Nurse is an application based business, the technical feasibility analysis is most important. Presently, there are many types of new applications available to the people in Singapore that help the people in solving their problems within a minimum time (Yaacob et al. 2016). However, in case of nursing service related application, the company must have a strong network through which it can make the application available to all the people in Singapore. Software is the primary factor of this business. As per the plan of the partners or entrepreneurs of Tech Nursing, the company will choose the operating systems of Android, Windows and IOS. On the other side, if the technical feasibility is analyzed in respect to the external market, then it can be identified that the above-mentioned software are easily available in the market. On the other side, the main required device is a mobile phone or Smartphone, which is also widely available in the market. Therefore, from the technical ground, the business will be feasible. Financial feasibility analysis As per the planning of the entrepreneurs of Grab-a-Nursing, 70% of the initial capital will be arranged by the entrepreneurs and 30% will be gathered by taking long-term bank loan at 10% interest per annum. The company has also decided that the initial investment will be same as the initial total cost of the company. However, the budgeted cost, profit and revenue of the company for initial three years are shown below: Particulars Amount (in $) (1st year) Amount (in $) (2nd year) Amount (in $) (3rd year) Revenue 10000 13900 14700 Cost of goods sold 6300 3100 3900 Gross profit 3700 10800 10800 Expenses for software maintenance 300 300 300 Salaries to the nurses 1000 1000 1400 Fees to the software developer 270 270 270 Distribution and advertisement expenses 410 680 710 Operating income 1720 8550 8120 Interest payment (10% on 1890) 189 189 189 Profit before tax 1531 8361 7931 Tax payment (30%) 459.3 2508.3 2379.3 Net profit 1071.7 5852.7 5551.7 Workings: Calculation of loan amount = 6300 * 30% From the above table, it can be said that in the second year the net profit of the company is expected to be highest. This is because in the first year, the initial cost of preparing the application is high, due to which the cost of goods sold will be higher, which is not applicable for the second and third years. However, as the company has a plan to increase the number of nurses in the third year for providing more services, the cost for paying the salaries will be higher and due to which the profit will decrease. Scenario versions There are many situations that may change the overall scenario of the new business. Here some of these situations are mentioned below: What if the existing hospitals and nursing homes pay more salary to the nurses? The availability of the nurses will reduce and the company will face difficulties in providing services on time. What if new company with quicker application comes in to the market? The popularity of Grab-a-Nurse will reduce and the customer base and revenue will also reduce. What if the company fails to recover the initial investment? The budgeted revenue of the company will decrease to the extent to which it will be suitable for the internal funds. Scalability The scalability of a new business can be identified with the help of three factors and those are entrepreneur base, owners capabilities and comprehensiveness of the business plan (Chua and Bedford 2015). In case of this new business, the entrepreneur base is strong because the partners of the business have enough financial backup and they have good knowledge of software and application. On the other side, the owners of the business have good motivational and managerial capacities to run a business and the business is new and with unique concept, the future of it is bright. Conclusion In this business plan, it has been identified that Grab-a-Nurse has a strong market opportunity, which it can use to earn more revenue. On the other side, business is also technically feasible. The demand for the service or application in Singapore will be high because most of the people in Singapore are tech savvy. However, the company needs to maintain the price and quality of the service up to the standard. At the same time, the company also needs to be prepared for any adverse situation. Jealousy in Shakespeares Othello Essay Example For Students
Jealousy in Shakespeares Othello Essay Jealousy in Othello Shakespeare is well for his ability to compose plays full of deceit, revenge, and jealousy. Othello, one of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s most recognized tragedies, was consistently evolving around the central theme of jealousy. As these lies are unraveled the central theme of his play became distinct, and clearly visible. Furthermore the theme of jealousy goes hand in hand with love, as often is the case in real life. Love consumes all those who take part in it, and in Othellos case his flaws lie in his loving Desdemona so blindly. It is for that single reason that Iago knows that such a naive man as Othello, who loves his wife so blindly and unrealistically, can be corrupted. Just as Othellos flaws lie within his inability to see past his jealous feelings, so does many of the other characters, no matter what social ranking they are classified in. Even from the well-developed characters, such as Othello, to the lesser figures, such as Roderigo, envy and lust are feelings all of Shakespeares characters are accountable for holding at one time or other in the play. Within each of the characters in Othello is a level of jealousy, which Iago creates by testing their pressure points for his benefit. In Act 1 scene 1, Shakespeare opens up to his audience a level of jealousy that goes hand in hand with feelings of greed. This is the moment in which Iago expresses his animosity for Othello. Behind Every Good Man is a Good Woman free essay sample
The following paper presents a detailed examination of women in the confederacy. The writer discusses the duties and involvement that women had in the way as well as examples of patriotism shown by women. We are also given some examples of female heroines from the war. From the paper: When we think about a Southern Belle, we envision a pale, fragile wisp of a woman who swoons if it gets to hot. She is delicate and beautiful and must be taken care of by a man. Over the last centuries this is the image that we have adopted when it comes to the way we perceive Southern women. The reality however is much different. Even during the Civil War women of the Confederate side were tough, capable and willing to do what ever it took to win the war effort against the North.

Masking Emotions and Mental Wars essays
Masking Emotions and Mental Wars essays When an individual tries to cope with emotions after a certain incident in their lives, they sometimes find themselves in a confused state of mind. Some decide to express their emotions out in the open, while others choose to withhold them. Regardless, each choice has a consequence. Some deal with emotions by refusing to see the truth, while others are unable to reveal it. Sometimes the truth must come out. Others are too inexperienced with the realities of emotional traumas that they are unable to cope with their feelings. Those that keep it inside allow the emotions to build up to a point in which the person is unable to find peace within themselves. In the works Othello, by William Shakespeare and A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, protagonists Othello and Gene go through a mental war, in which they put on a persona to hide the truth from the outside world. Through this, it is shown, when the characters mask their emotions it leads to irrationality, overwhelmed jealousy an d inconsolable guilt. Logical thinking ceases to exist when Othello and Gene hide their emotions from others. Othello refuses to see the truth, whereas, Gene is unable to reveal the truth. Therefore, they begin to bury their emotions deep within themselves and eventually these feelings take over their state of mind. Rather than talking to those that it involved, Othello and Gene decide they rather bring harm to them. Genes interests lie primarily in getting good grades and studying, but he finds himself drawn to his roommate Finny who has all the qualities of a leader and a fighter. There is a personal struggle between Gene and Finny. They are best friends, but at the same time enemies. Gene is jealous of Finny and resents him; he chooses to deal with this by hiding his emotions and bringing pain to his defenseless friend. If terrorism ever justify Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
If terrorism ever justify - Essay Example A review of key studies done regarding terrorism show that it is not an easy topic to discuss much less understand. They point out that terrorism has deep roots in socio-political issues and as such have a great range of motivations and objectives (Edwards). It is for the same reason that the debate on whether terrorism can be justified or not is hard to settle. In general, most materials have been very critical of terrorist acts, citing their indiscriminate and long-term impact. There are also common assumption about who terrorists are and who are against it. At the same time, Jenkins says that there is an assumption that terrorism is always subversive or against social institutions. Singh points out that the radical ideas at the core of terrorism are not new or unique. It is considered as a valid military strategy and has been used successfully in many military campaigns among the world's greatest civilizations (377-379). At the same time, Jenkins points out that in consideration alone of the worldwide response to recent terrorist activities, there is no denying that it can be used against perceived abusers (71).

Learning Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Learning Theory - Essay Example Kolb. However in the recent years the ways of learning given by Kolb have been amended and put into different forms. This essay would further analyze the different ways of learning in the light of the basic tool of Kolb. According to David A. Kolb individuals learn through four different styles. The styles followed by individuals are in accordance to the behavior exhibited by the individual. These four learning techniques not only apply to objective instances but also to practical ones. It helps to decide and take decisions accordingly in businesses and while leading. The learning ways given by Kolb have changed through out to give a better understanding to the learners. These can be divided into Activist, Reflective, Theorist and Pragmatist. People who tend to work out their role through experimentation are included in the group of Activists. Individuals in this group tend to play an active function to attain knowledge and produce effective results in accordance. As experimentation is the basis of this group it makes the individuals change the whole scenario of a certain theme. It can be said to be a disadvantage if used in an environment where theories and structure play a role. The main key to this type of learning is getting influence from others and then taking an action accordingly. Similarly this learning style can be an advantage if used at a place where individuals are more goal oriented. This learning technique can be made stronger if facts are used instead of direct experimentation. One can think properly before carrying out a certain step and this can make this learning style a perfect one. Furthermore this style is only welcomed at places where experimentation is recommended. Team work is usually preferred i n this type of learning technique as it would help the individual to take influence from others and work accordingly. Another learning way as described by Kolb is Reflective. In this type of learning one does not act or implement his thinking in the way it should be. He rather thinks and observes all the things thoughtfully for a long time. Clearing up of ideas and concepts is the basic theme in this type of learning. One is discouraged from carrying on the experimentation stage rather he is diverted towards learning and balancing concepts. In this type of learning one can evaluate a situation from all possible angles and can know better how it should be implemented in practice. However mostly they do not tend to carry out the experiments related to the concepts learned and assessed. These individuals tend to work in groups and are more diverted towards the field of arts. The third way of learning is known to be Theorist which deals with the individuals who tend to gather out facts arrange it and conclude accordingly. These types of individuals do not take into account the emotions and reality but r ather base their conclusions on theories. The practicalities of different situations are not taken into account by this type of learning individuals. These individuals are more diverted to abstract thoughts and do not pay heed to human factor i.e. the emotional factor. Most of the individuals who belong to this category may not do well in instances where the techniques are to be related to the humans or to the feelings of these human beings. Most of the people belonging to this group are more indulged in the field of science. The fourth and the last way of learning i

Zipcar Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Zipcar - Essay Example It can be apparently said that in the US car rental market, as per 2011 statistical records, revenue touched a record high with the process of generation of over $1000, per unit for the entire US market, thereby bringing into focus the various levels of efficiencies that has been achieved by the players in the particular market (Arn.com 2012). However, it can be said that the entire market for this business is highly vulnerable to various factors of macro and micro economic nature (IbisWorld.com 2012). Item 2. The young car rental company Zipcar has increasingly focused its forward approach on various strategies with regards to capitalizing on the various prospects that are associated with the growth of the company as well as its sustenance in the car rental market in the presence of big competitors and tremendous competition and market pressure in the long term. For the purpose of attaining significant growth and business edge, Zipcar focused on effective segmentation and targeting. By the focusing on the opportunity of targeting college crowd for its rental services, it developed a unique market to serve and thereby developing an edge over the others. It can be said that while this certainly provided an edge at the beginning, but it may not be sustainable in the long term as competitors may increasingly target the same market. Also, from the damage point of view, the cost of maintaining the resources while catering to the target market is also significantly high. The financial analysis a lso supports the fact of high operating expenses for the company. The evaluation of the financial performance over the 3 year period shows that thought the company had an increase in revenue yet the cost related to fleet operations also went up. It also revealed that the operating expenses also increased over the period. So, it can be said that servicing the college student are coming out as a little expensive over the years. Talking in terms of the companyââ¬â¢s long term prospects, it can be said that the company is yet to get established in a secured manner. The reason behind that is because though the company has achieved a significant growth in revenue yet its operational expenses are also increasing. Despite the high growth rate, it is not very effective for a new company to have high operating costs as the chances of maintaining profits will gets reduced with the companyââ¬â¢s attainment of capacity as well as market saturation by other car rental companies. Apart from this, it also has to be taken in to account that the companyââ¬â¢s main competitive edge of servicing the college students can be targeted by well established rival companies, thereby reducing the companyââ¬â¢s standalone advantages. The company should focus on increasing the efficiency in terms of economies of scale by reducing cost of operations for the purpose of securing itself over the long term. Item 3. It can be said t

This report is issued when the auditor concludes that financial statements appear to be presented fairly and there are no any significant reservations or any material misstatements found within the financial statements presented. The standard unqualified audit report covers seven distinct parts: Report title Introductory paragraph Scope paragraph Opinion paragraph Name of auditor Auditors address Audit report date. Typically, the report title will consists the word independent to demonstrate that the audit report prepared is unbiased in all aspects. The introductory paragraph states the responsibilities and roles of management and the auditor and it is the first paragraph of the report; the scope paragraph is a factual statement regarding the action of the auditor in audit process; the opinion paragraph indicates the conclusion made by the auditor based on the audit result obtained and it is the last paragraph of the report. The name will identify the audit firm and the address show the location of the audit firm. The date will show when the audit process is completed. For an auditor to issue a standard unqualified audit report, there are five specific conditions required to be met: The financial statements must comprise all statements. (Statement of Cash Flow, Income Statement Balance Sheet) The engagement is following the International Standards of Auditing (ISAs) in all respects. Adequate evidences have been gathered to conclude that the three standards of fieldwork have been met. The approved accounting standards, which is the Financial Reporting Standards (FRS) and the Company Act, 1965 in Malaysia are used to prepare the financial statements and the financial statements includes proper and sufficient disclosure of all relevant material matters. The financial report is under the condition that is not requiring any additional explanation or any modification. For example, if the companys financial report had met these five circumstances, the opinion paragraph will contain the phrases: In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position ofà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ (Auditors report, 2012) to warrant the financial statements give a true and fair view of the companys financial status. If any of the five conditions mentioned above are not met, the auditor cannot issue a standard unqualified report. Hence, auditor is necessary to issue other types of audit report. On some occasions, a business can receive an unqualified audit report on its financial statements, but it is not a standard unqualified audit report. It can be classified as unqualified audit report with explanatory paragraph or modified wording. This report met the criteria of satisfactory audit and the financial statements are presented in a true and fair view basis. However, the auditor believes that it is necessary to provide additional information or to modify in the wording of the standard unqualified report. In order to ensure the issuance appropriate unqualified report with an explanatory paragraph or modified wording, it depends on five circumstances: Application of approved accounting standards is lacking of consistency. There is significant doubt about going concern. Auditor agrees with a deviation from the promulgated accounting principles. There is specific matters about the financial statements need to be emphasized. Other auditors are involved in the reports. The first four circumstances mentioned above require the addition of an explanatory paragraph in the reports. Thus, the auditor has to issue an unqualified audit report with explanatory paragraph. For example, when the auditor found that the company does not have the ability to pay its debts when it is due (Going concern). For instance, auditor issues an unqualified audit report with explanatory paragraph which explain that there will be a misleading if the company continues to stick to the promulgated accounting principles (Deviation). Furthermore, the introductory paragraph, scope paragraph and opinion paragraph are remains without any modification while a separate explanatory paragraph is added after the opinion paragraph. The explanatory paragraph will begin with the phrases: Without qualifying our opinion, we draw attention toà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ (Alvin et al., 2008, p.58) In contrast, an unqualified audit report with modified wording will be used only when the audit report involving the use of other auditors. In this case, the report consists of three modified paragraph. For instance, an unqualified audit report with modified wording is issued when auditor wants to make reference in audit report or to qualify the opinion. (Other auditors are involved) Due to some reasons, there are three circumstances that are inappropriate for an auditor to issue an unqualified report. The three conditions that required a departure from an unqualified audit reports are: Scope limitation Departure from approved accounting standards Lack of independence of the auditor Scope limitation exists when the auditors seemed unable to gather adequate evidence to make a conclusion on whether the financial statements are stated in line with the approved accounting standards. Departure from approved accounting standards arises in situation where the presented financial statements are not in conformity with the approved accounting standards. Lack of independence of the auditor means there is a non-independent relationship under the code of ethic between auditor and auditee or there is material conflict of interest occur between this both parties. When these three conditions exist and is material, the auditor is required to issue a report other than the unqualified report, which are qualified opinion, adverse opinion and disclaimer of opinion. A qualified report is issued when the auditor encountered any of these two situations, scope of audit is restricted or single deviation from approved accounting standards, but the financial statements presented are free of any misstatements. Typically, the writing of a qualified opinion is very similar to an unqualified opinion, but it includes an explanatory paragraph that is clearly explains the reasons for the qualified audit report before opinion paragraph but after scope paragraph. Moreover, the term except for must be used only when an auditor issue a qualified report. This will indicate that the auditor is satisfied that the overall financial statements are stated fairly except for certain aspect of them. The introductory paragraph is similar to the unqualified opinion whereas a slight modification is done in the scope and the opinion paragraphs. For example, in scope paragraph to inform the user about the exception of this qualification, the auditor performs the rest of the a udit without qualifications by stating: Except as discussed in the following paragraph, we conducted our audit (Auditors report, 2012) whereas in opinion paragraph, the auditor should states: In our opinion, except forà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ (Auditors report, 2012) to remind the user regarding the expressed qualification is explicitly excluded from auditors opinion. In addition, a qualified report can be in the form of a qualification of both the scope and the opinion or of the opinion alone. Auditor may issue a scope and opinion qualification when he/she could not accumulate sufficient data required by the approved accounting standards. This may due to the clients restriction or the auditor had encountered some circumstance that prevents him/her to conduct a complete audit. Examples of this include an auditor not being able to observe and test a companys inventory of goods. If the auditor audited the rest of the financial statements and is reasonably sure that they conform with GAAP, then the auditor simply states that the financial statements are fairly presented, with the exception of the inventory which could not be audited. (Auditors report, 2012) In this case, a standard wording for introductory paragraph will be used and the scope paragraph will be edited to make user aware of the qualification and the opinion paragraph is to be modified. On the other hand, a qualification of the opinion alone is issued when specific records are missing or some parts of the financial statements are not followed with the approved accounting standards. Examples of this include a company dedicated to a retail business that did not correctly calculate the depreciation expense of its building. Even if this expense is considered material, since the rest of the financial statements do conform with GAAP, then the auditor qualifies the opinion by describing the depreciation misstatement in the report and continues to issue a clean opinion on the rest of the financial statements. (Auditors report, 2012) In this situation, auditor use standard wording for introductory and scope paragraph, then add an additional paragraph to explain the companys deviation from the approved accounting standards and add in certain phrases in the opinion paragraph. Adverse opinion is the worst type of audit report that a company received and it is considered the opposite of an unqualified opinion. Auditor will issue this type of report when it is believes that the financial reports presented are differ from the approved accounting standards. In addition, auditor had concluded that misstatement and misleading are both material and pervasive to the financial statements, this means the information contained have been falsified or are in other ways erroneous. For instance, the failure of a company to issue the consolidation of all its operations or a material account such as revenue account is not recorded properly. The wording of the adverse report is exactly the same as with the qualified report. Auditor will modify the scope paragraph accordingly and add another paragraph after scope paragraph, but before opinion paragraph to discuss the reason why it is an adverse opinion. The opinion paragraph involves the most significant change with the qualified report, where it is stating the facts that the financial statements are not conformity with the approved accounting standards. For example, the opinion paragraph will contain the phrases: In our opinion, because of the situations mentioned above (in the explanatory paragraph), the financial statements referred to in the first paragraph do not present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position ofà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ (Auditors report, 2012) to reveals that the financial reports are unreliable, inaccurate and do not present a fair view of the companys financial status or results of operations and cash flows. It is an indication of fraud. An adverse opinion can arise only when the auditor has knowledge, after an adequate investigation, of the absence of conformity. (Alvin et al., 2008, p.60) When receiving an adverse report, the auditee is requested to do correction in its financial statements and send it to re-audit to obtain another audit report. Otherwise, the investors, lenders, governments and other users will generally not accept it. Lastly, a disclaimer of opinion, generally referred to simply as a disclaimer, is a special type of audit report. In certain situation, due to various reasons, an auditor could not perform their work. He/She tried to audit the company but unable to obtain sufficient amount of audit evidence, thus he/she refuses to express an opinion on the companys financial status. Since the auditor could not complete an accurate audit report, he/she will issue a disclaimer of opinion. A disclaimer opinion is differs from the adverse opinion. It is only issued when the auditor is lacking of the knowledge regarding the companys financial statements while adverse opinion is issued when the auditor has the knowledge that the financial records provided has been misrepresented. A disclaimer of opinion is appropriate in the following circumstances: lack of independence (SAS 26); scope limitations (inability to obtain sufficient competent evidential matter) (SAS 58); when the auditor concludes that there i s substantial doubt about the entitys ability to survive (going-concern) (SAS 59); and matters involving uncertainties (SAS 79). (Davis, Robert R., 2004, para. 2) For example, the client intentionally hides or refuses to present sufficient appropriate information and evidence to the auditor in significant areas of the financial statements. (Scope limitation) For instance, the company has faced going concern problem which means that the company may not be able to continue operating in the near future. (Substantial doubt about the entitys ability to survive) Additionally, a disclaimer opinion is also distinguished from the other types of audit reports. This is because it only provides little information concerning the audit itself and consists of an additional paragraph that explaining the reasons for the issuance of disclaimer report. In this report, all the paragraphs are under extensively modification and with the exclusion of the entire scope paragraph since the auditor could not adequately perform the audit. The first phrase in the introductory paragraph will be changed to We were engaged to audità ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ (Auditors report, 2012) instead of We have auditedà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ (Auditors report, 2012) in order to let the users aware of the audit is not completed. Since the audit was not completed and opinion cannot be expressed, the auditor disagrees to take any responsibility by omitting the last sentence in this paragraph, that is: Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. (Audito rs report, 2012) Just like the qualified and adverse opinions, auditor must discuss the conditions for the disclaimer in explanatory paragraph. Lastly, the opinion paragraph is completely adjusted to Because of the significance of the matters discussed in the preceding paragraphs, the scope of our work was not sufficient to enable us to express, and we do not express, an opinion of the financial statements referred to in the first paragraph. (Auditors report, 2012) in order to let users know that the auditor cannot form and express an opinion on the companys financial status due to the conditions stated in the explanatory paragraph.

Buried Child Essay -- essays research papers
Itââ¬â¢s amazing what a secret can do to a person. Keeping secrets among friends can be fun, or helpful when you need to confide in someone you trust. Other secrets can do more harm than good. They can fester inside you and cause endless pain. In "Buried Child," this is the case. The family is permanently altered by their secret, which becomes a growing moral cancer to them, leaving each impotent in their own way. The play takes place on Dodgeââ¬â¢s farm. About thirty years ago, the farm was fertile and prosperous. Dodge and Halie didnââ¬â¢t have a wonderful marriage, however. Things took a turn for the worse when Halie became pregnant with someone else. It is suggested that Tilden is the father. The evidence to support this includes the fact that the baby was small, and that Tilden would sing to it and take it for long walks all day, just talking to it and treating it as his own. "Tilden was the one who knew. Better than any of us. Heââ¬â¢d walk for miles with that kid in his arms. Halie let him take it. All night sometimes." (p. 124) Dodge would not allow this abomination to grow up and live in his family, so he drowned it, and buried it in the backyard. We can guess that this is when the farm ceased to be fertile, and fell into disuse. This is a symbol of the death of honesty and the birth of the familyââ¬â¢s terrible secret. Why exactly does everything go wrong for this family? We donââ¬â¢t know exactly when the problems started, but we know that Ansel died on his honeymoon, Bradley cut off his own leg in a chain saw accident and is now mentally imbalanced, Tilden is nonfunctional and has been driven out of New Mexico, Dodge is a crazy old sick guy, and Halie is doing shady things with the preacher. Vince is the only person capable of facing the world and life, but he too is corrupted by the secret at the end. The answer to the question is that their secret, the dead child, is a secret festering them from the inside out. It is unclear how long this moral degradation took, it may have taken years for all this to happen. We do know that it has left everyone impotent. Bradley is the most vivid example of this impotence. His false leg is his crutch, both figuratively and literally. With it, he has the most power of any of the people in the play. He maims and shaves Dodge with no repercussions, intimidates Tilden to the point of making him... ...t the secret out, like the only thing that was keeping him alive was protecting the secret from outside view. Shelley leaves because she is an outsider and has no part of the corruption. It is interesting to note that no one remembers Vince until he is acting as crazy as the rest of the family. He is the only one who is capable of dealing with life outside the house. It is unclear whether or not he is different because the brunt of the degradation happened to the family within the six years since his last visit, or if the act of leaving and forcing himself to live away from the secret changed him. He had no knowledge of the buried child until it was revealed, but the problems of his family members could easily have been passed on to him subconsciously by everyone else. Their actions could have had a profound effect on the way he thinks and acts. It is when Vince is accepted back into that family that Shelly realizes there is no hope for this family. They are lost. She then leaves them all to their permanent insanity. This shows that even though the secret was finally brought out into the open, it was too little too late. A terrible secret kept that long can tear a person apart.

Patriotism In The Poetry Of The Great War English Literature Essay
Patriotic ideals and attitudes towards the Great War changed dramatically when soldiers began returning place ; the barbarous world sing warfare became evident to civilians. Soldiers excessively began to oppugn their forfeits for their state, since 1000s of deceases were ensuing and there was a sense of lost intent. Furthermore, many work forces suffered from shell daze, whilst those who had died were non seen as baronial, since nil good was achieved or resolved after the war. Prior to soldiers returning place, civilians were incognizant of how barbarous the war truly was, still go oning to utilize old loyal mottos which romanticised warfare. Therefore, war poets who had fought on the forepart saw it as their responsibility to show the harsh worlds, which finally affected their imaginativenesss and poetic technique, go forthing them traumatised and everlastingly unable to bury. Siegfried Sassoon ââ¬Ës ââ¬ËGlory of Women ââ¬Ë articulates how propaganda enforced a ââ¬Ëglorious ââ¬Ë portraiture of enlisting to the war. Sassoon illustrates the misrepresentation adult females faced sing the romantic impressions of war juxtaposed to its rough world. Work force were killed for no intent, since the original cause of the war had been lost, whilst adult females held the naif belief that work forces were nobly prosecuting heroic ideals. Sassoon argued that the intent of war was lost, which is partially why the loyal ideal dispersed ; forfeit was non dignified, since the combat was go oning and nil was altering. Sassoon stated, ââ¬ËThis war, upon which I entered as a war of defense mechanism and release, has now become a war of aggression and conquering ââ¬Ë[ 1 ], and he saw the war as being prolonged unnecessarily. ââ¬ËGlory of Women ââ¬Ë adopts a alone signifier since Sassoon amalgamates both the English and Italian sonnet ; the construction itself is hence dry, since the underlying tone is one of resentment and ill will towards civilians. Sassoon emphasises that the loyal ideal and romanticised impression of war is a prevarication entirely enforced by propaganda. The conventional abab rime strategy, synonymous with a typical English sonnet, runs through the two quatrains, which finally express the adult females ââ¬Ës esteem for heroic soldiers and their captivation with war, ââ¬ËYou love us when we ââ¬Ëre heroes ââ¬Ë[ 2 ]and ââ¬ËYou listen with delectation ââ¬Ë ( line 5 ) . However, undertones of acrimonious sarcasm pervade the octave, conveying Sassoon ââ¬Ës antipathy towards the misrepresentation enforced upon civilians, ââ¬ËYou believe/That gallantry redeems the war ââ¬Ës shame ââ¬Ë ( line 4 ) . The ââ¬ËYou ââ¬Ë is turn toing adult females at place , and its changeless repeat segregates the soldiers from society and represents its nescient deficiency of consciousness towards the world of warfare. Furthermore, the to a great extent dry linguistic communication used throughout the octave, such as ââ¬ËWorship ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËLove ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËLaurelled ââ¬Ë ( lines 3,1 & A ; 8 ) is mocked by the on-going unenrgetic beat of the verse form, ââ¬ËAnd mourn our laureled memories when we ââ¬Ëre killed ââ¬Ë ( line 8 ) , which alongside the iambic pentameter, highlights the lip service of nationalism. Therefore, the beat and signifier are constructed intentionally in a tight and conventional construction to reflect the unreal composing of prevarications which the populace were led to believe, sing the war as dignifying and heroic. Sassoon farther attacks the ââ¬ËDelight ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËThrill ââ¬Ë ( lines 5 & A ; 6 ) which civilians felt when told the ââ¬ËTales of soil and danger ââ¬Ë ( line 6 ) ; the initial rhyme makes these ââ¬Ëtales ââ¬Ë seem exciting, proposing a fairy tale, which distances the civilians from the black world of the soldiers despairing state of affairs. Furthermore, ââ¬ËYou crown our distant ardor ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËYou worship ornaments ââ¬Ë ( lines 7 & A ; 3 ) suggests knighthood and courage, and the octave besides indicates canonized artificiality ; the ââ¬ËDecorations ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËShells ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËCrown ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËLaurel [ led ] ââ¬Ë ( lines 3,5,7 & A ; 8 ) are false and mercenary, symbolizing the deceit of war to civilians. The six, conversely, moves from the contrived portraiture of war, to its cruel world, following a Petrarchan cdecde rime strategy, which heightens Sassoon ââ¬Ës intensified acrimonious tone. The octave therefore insinuates Sassoon ââ¬Ës choler, but the Volta, ââ¬ËYou ca n't believe that British military personnels ââ¬Ëretire â⬠( line 9 ) obviously expresses Sassoon ââ¬Ës bitterness for the populace ââ¬Ës incredulous attitude towards resigned soldiers and their ââ¬Ëlack of nationalism ââ¬Ë . The old ââ¬ËWorship ââ¬Ë ( line 3 ) of the mercenary gear is juxtaposed to the blunt world of the work forces who ââ¬ËRun ââ¬Ë ( line 10 ) with fright which finally ââ¬ËBreaks them ââ¬Ë ( line 10 ) , bespeaking that these work forces will either be broken through shell daze or decease ; there is no flight from injury. The image stoping the verse form, ââ¬ËHis face is trodden deeper in the clay ââ¬Ë ( line 14 ) farther conveys this thought that traumatic memories will ne'er be forgotten. The soldier will be trodden ââ¬ËDeeper ââ¬Ë ( line 14 ) as clip base on ballss ; bespeaking how he will everlastingly be imprinted on the land, yet there is besides a affecting tone proposing that he has been left and forgotten about, which dispels all semblances sing war as a baronial chase. Sassoon intentionally replaces the conventional rhyming pair featured in the English sonnet by grouping three lines together to exemplify his concluding message, ââ¬ËO German female parent dreaming by the fire ââ¬Ë ( line 12 ) , indenting the ââ¬ËO ââ¬Ë to pull attending to these concluding ideas. Sassoon is exemplifying how he has torn down the hatred barrier between the two states and treated them as one ; indenting the border separates the German female parent from the English civilians he is mentioning to in the verse form, yet his message conveys that the German female parent would be merely as devastated by her boy ââ¬Ës decease as an English female parent would. Similarly, both states are pressurised by untruthful propaganda, and false thoughts of nationalism. Sassoon therefore saw all worlds every bit, which contradicts the impression of war in itself. Wilfred Owen ââ¬Ës, ââ¬ËDulce Et Decorum Est ââ¬Ë , likewise conveys the morbid worlds of war, juxtaposing civilians ââ¬Ë loyal ideals. Owen vividly depicts a soldier deceasing from a gas onslaught, underscoring how forfeit was non glamourous and epic as propaganda conveyed it to be, but alternatively, it was unpointed and barbarous. Nerve gas causes the person to experience a drowning esthesis, and Owen therefore makes changeless mentions to H2O associated with this deceasing adult male, ââ¬ËSea ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËDrowning ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËGargling ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËGuttering ââ¬Ë[ 3 ]. These sounds are brooding of the adult male ââ¬ËChoking ââ¬Ë ( line 16 ) , and as we read the verse form aloud, we can literally hear him deceasing. Furthermore, these verbs are distinguished from the other work forces ââ¬ËFlound'ring, ââ¬ËFumbling ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËStumbling ââ¬Ë ( lines 12,9 & A ; 11 ) which are all actions performed on land. The deceasing adult male in the ââ¬ËGreen sea ââ¬Ë ( line 14 ) is therefore to the full detached from his fellow soldiers in his death minutes, and the affecting statement from the talker, ââ¬ËHe plunges at me ââ¬Ë ( line 16 ) , farther conveys the deceasing adult male ââ¬Ës despairing effort to make out. However, he is stray and entirely ; decease and forfeit are hence non honorable qualities or loyal, but lonely and terrorizing. Owen challenges the conventional poetic signifier, which signifies the dislocation of society ââ¬Ës rules and its constituted system. Initially, the verse form looks as though it is written in iambic pentameter, but Owen breaks up the iambic beat with punctuation, ââ¬ËBut limped on, blood-shod. All went square ; all blind ââ¬Ë ( line 6 ) , delegating the verse form with a colloquial tone. However, this confused beat is effectual, since Owen did non desire his verse form to flux swimmingly ; it is intentionally full of ââ¬ËStumbling ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËFatigue ââ¬Ë ( lines 11 & A ; 7 ) , symbolizing a realistic tone of devastation and conveyance that nationalism, and the romanticised image of war, no longer existed. The soldiers in the verse form are portrayed pitifully, urgently seeking to persist ; this impression is highlighted through the actions of the work forces who are ââ¬ËBent dual ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËMarched asleep ââ¬Ë , ââ¬ËTrudge ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËLimped on ââ¬Ë ( lines 1,5,4 & A ; 6 ) , and the slow beat adds to their sulky motion. The gait of the beat so quickly speeds up in the undermentioned stanza, when person shouts, ââ¬ËGas! Gas! Quick, boys! ââ¬â An rapture of groping ââ¬Ë ( line 9 ) . Two forces are hence working against each other, since the words ââ¬ËFumbling ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËClumsy ââ¬Ë ( lines 9 & A ; 10 ) suggest the work forces are still trapped in this slow motion, but the usage of exclaiming Markss and the capitalization of ââ¬ËGas! ââ¬Ë implies a sense of urgency and force per unit area. Therefore, the work forces are non portrayed as ââ¬Ëracing ââ¬Ë for their gas masks, foregrounding a feeling of at hand licking and futility , and their apathetic nature towards seting their masks on reveals the atrociousnesss of warfare. The usage of similes in the verse form are highly effectual ; at the beginning of the verse form, the soldiers are compared to old cripples ââ¬ËBent double, like old mendicants under pokes, / Knock-kneed, coughing like beldams ââ¬Ë ( lines 1-2 ) . The work forces ironically juxtapose the fine-looking image of a soldier enforced by propaganda. Furthermore, these gap lines are compared to the stoping of the verse form which portrays ââ¬ËInnocent linguas ââ¬Ë and ââ¬ËChildren ââ¬Ë ( lines 24 & A ; 26 ) , which serve as a reminder that these work forces are non aged and crippled, but vernal, and there is nil glorious about the decease of kids. Owen is angry with the deceit of warfare to boys whose lives have merely merely begun and are necessarily being wasted for nil. A farther simile which Owen uses to convey his choler towards the impression of nationalism is, ââ¬ËHis hanging face, like a Satan ââ¬Ës sick of wickedness ââ¬Ë ( line 20 ) . This image suggests that if the Satan is ill of wickedness, which is the chief feature he is associated with, he is efficaciously oppugning his values and manner of life. The ââ¬Ëhanging face ââ¬Ë farther reflects his letdown with his realization that his being has been for no intent. Owen is therefore connoting that likewise, the deceasing soldier is oppugning nationalism and ââ¬Ëglory ââ¬Ë in deceasing, gaining his decease will hold no positive result, and his life has been wasted unnecessarily. Furthermore, Owen could be seen as comparing the prevarications of nationalism and war with wickedness itself. To reason, Sassoon and Owen provided civilians with the true word picture of warfare because the publicity of deceasing for one ââ¬Ës state was unfair, since 1000s of work forces were giving their lives for a lost cause. There was a necessity hence to kill the exploited image of nationalism created by propaganda, and expose the ruthless world of giving oneself to warfare.

To Kill a Mockingbird -From Childhood to Adolescent in Less essays
To Kill a Mockingbird -From Childhood to Adolescent in Less essays From Childhood to Adolescent in Less than 250 Pages To Kill A Mockingbird is a perfect example of racism and unfair judgments about people. The primary message in the novel is that of racism and how the actions of a community, not just a parent, affect children. The secondary message is about how unfair judgments about people are wrong and cruel. Both the racism and judgment themes are brought to life and dealt with by following the maturation of Jem and his younger sister, Scout. Both Scout and Jem mature throughout the book but Jem, being on the brink of adolescence, makes the greatest leaps in maturation. As readers, we see Jem mature and grow as a person. He learns many things, but also loses many things. As he grew up and changes, he begins to see how things really were, and gains the knowledge of the pure hate that one man can show another. Jem loses his innocence when he finds this out. He begins to see how cruel the world can be to someone who is a little different or strange. He sees this in the prejudice that is shown to Tom Robinson, Walter Cunningham and Miss Maudie. Jem also matures as he gains the wisdom of the world outside his back door and he begins to see how society works, (it is very cruel and cynical). Jems father, Atticus teaches Jem and Scout to be polite, caring kids. He instills in them a great sense of love for their neighbor and tells them things that will help them get on in life. Jem is very lucky to have someone to guide him along the way. Although he is faced with the real world, he had lots of people who willingly explain to him and guide him. Finally, we see how Jem matures by seeing how his relationships change with his father, Atticus; his sister, Scout; and his neighbor, Boo Radley. For example, Jems relation to Atticus starts out as the basic child-father relationship. But as the story progresses, he begins to see what a great man he is. He realizes that by de ...

The efficency of suppliers prequaification Essay Example
The efficency of suppliers prequaification Essay Example The efficency of suppliers prequaification Essay The efficency of suppliers prequaification Essay The public owners for instance award contracts o the lowest responsible bidder in order to fulfill the requirements of the law that protect public interest and funds, prevent fraud, collusion, and favoritism, and obtain quality construction at reasonable and fair prices. Determination of the lowest bidder is easy and direct, while on the other hand determining whether the contractor is responsible or not is not as easy. Selection of contractors based on the lowest bid price has been criticized by a section of the construction industry itself. It has long been a source of frustration to those involved with competitive-bid construction projects that owners often treat low- laity construction work no differently from high-quality construction work. Both owners and contractors have acknowledged this problem. In a study carried out for SHASTA by Minch Jar. And Smith, 2001 , it was observed that contractors who were confident in their ability to produce high-quality work expressed their perceptions that public owners actually reward poor workmanship, at least indirectly. According to the contractors, they do this by not penalizing poor workmanship, thus giving a bidding edge to those contractors who take advantage of the owners reluctance to penalize them. The contractors performing high quality work are discouraged about the prospect of continuing to bid for construction work against contractors who consistently submit low bids and produce low quality products. In many cases, it was expressed that these same low bidding contractors consistently submit change orders for extras even when the claimed work was part of the original design. No evidence was provided, however, to support these claims. Contractor prettification is one of the processes among many others that are used to ensure that the right contractor is chosen for the right Job. Briefly, contractor prettification can be defined as a decision making process by which an owner evaluates the competence of a candidate contractor to perform the requirements associated with a given project even before the final bidding process is set in motion. Contractor prettification will be described in greater detail in the subsequent chapter. One or any combination of the following may be considered for prettification: Contractors. Subcontractors. Suppliers. Products. Services, including professional services. Prettification of contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, products and services for publicly funded projects is problematic and the potential for criticism by the private sector, particularly by those parties who are not qualified, is always present. Thus making it obvious for everyone that the prettification process is not be taken lightly and also that its application is a function of a projects complexity and magnitude. Several multi criteria decision making models for contractor prettification are available for use in the industry and research field. These decision making models encompass a wide range of methodologies beginning with the simple Point Allocation PA) methodology and ending up with complex models such as models based on genetic algorithms, neural networks and stochastic probabilities. Each method has its own unique group of users. Users have based their choice of prettification models on varying factors such as user sophistication, cost of application of method, appropriateness of application of method to the particular project etc. This proliferation of prettification models is both a boon and a bane for an educated owner since it gives the owner a wide range of models to choose from while at the AMA time it creates doubt in the owners mind regarding the best possible method or model for prevailing contractors for a particular project. The models that are on the high end level of the methodology ladder are too sophisticated to be easily understood and appreciated by an average owner thus leaving the owner with no choice but to choose a model from the existing simpler ones being used in the industry. The advantage of using models implemented in industry is that they are simpler and easily understandable by everyone in the construction industry. This type of models can be labeled as Practical prettification models. Within the Practical models the level of sophistication varies from the simple to the highly complex. The issue of concern is to determine how efficient these contractor prettification models really are. Which contractor prettification model gives the best result when each prettification model is supplied with the same set of contractor information? This issue can be best addressed by a comparative analysis of prettification models. This analysis would include both quantitative as well as qualitative analysis in order to arrive at a proper conclusion regarding the efficacy of he prettification models.

Major cusses of Greek Dark Ages - Research Paper Example This paper explores the Dark Ages and the major causes that thrust a splendid civilization like Greek into abrupt termination or presumably so. It briefly explores the authenticity of term Dark Age and its perceived occurrence. Drawing on the observations and evidences of Rhys Carpenter and V. Desborough, the paper concludes that Dark Age is a term that scholars used to name the interruption reported between evolutionary transitions from Mycenaean to Ionian Age. Irrespective of the terminology, presumed Dark Age was caused by depopulation or migration of Mycenaean as a result of natural disasters (earthquake or volcanic) rather than foreign invasion or Trojan War. Greek Dark Ages: Major Causes of Termination Dark Ages of ancient Greek is the latest scholastic term that refers to the centuries between 1100 and 800 B.C. The time period attributed as Dark ranges from Mycenaean civilizationââ¬â¢s collapse to the establishment of Ionian Age. Abrupt and unanticipated destruction of such a wealthy and civilized culture as Greek is source of surprise and intense debate among literary and archeological circles. This paper explores the Dark Ages, major causes that led Greeks into it and concludes that the Dark Age itself is nothing but a gap of literary evidence in the evolutionary process as a consequence of climatic upheaval in the region during late seventh and eighth centuries. The term ââ¬Å"Dark Agesâ⬠is recently coined by modern scholars who refer it as the period that intervenes between 1200 BC with the downfall of the Mycenaean palaces and around emergence of a new state form, called the polis. Ancient writers never acknowledged major distinction between historical period and heroic age .During 700 BC, writings of Hesiod represents a gradual decline of Greek society and symbolizes them with five successive ââ¬Å"Agesâ⬠, referred as gold, silver, bronze, heroes, and iron age (Works and Days 109-76 as cited in Hall, 2006, p.202).On the other hand, Thycydides depicted early Greek history as progressive marked with stable growth of resources and power. However, the Trojan War aftermath brought immediate instability and migration (as cited in Hall, 2006, p.202).Hall (2006) further states: There is no real sense of a cultural or economic ââ¬Å"troughâ⬠that stands in stark contrast to conditions [neither]before the Trojan expedition, nor again of a ââ¬Å"renaissanceâ⬠associated with the rise of the polisâ⬠¦Greeks believed that polis had existed from timeà immemorial. (p.203) Scholars endorsed Thucydidesââ¬â¢ general schema up to 1870s,however,some in general and George Grote in particular highlighted that lack of recent evidence hinders the construction of Greek historical narrative before 776 BC(as cited in Hall,2003,P.203).Later, Heinrich Schliemannââ¬â¢s excavations at Troy in 1870-90s,Mycenae in 1876, and Tiryns in 1884(as cited in Hall,2003,P.203) not only established that Greek mainland had been a h ome to civilized culture, but also confirmed the sudden end of palaces associated with ââ¬Å"Mycenaeanâ⬠civilization. The major concern here is the collapse of Mycenaean civilization and its reasons. It is believed (as cited in Hall, 2003): Following Fliners Petrieââ¬â¢s publication in 1890 of Mycenaean pottery in Egyptian context of the 18th and 19th Dynasties and his conclusion that the Mycenaean palaces has been destroyed around 1200 BC, it became evidentâ⬠¦ gap of approximately five centuries between the collapse of the palaces and the first extant literature asà represented by Hesiod and the lyric poets of the 7th century BC. The sheer paucity of evidence for this intervening period had already by the last decade of the 19th century led historians to term it a ââ¬Å"Dark Ageâ⬠or ââ¬Å"the medieval epoch of Greece. (p.203) Foreign invasion by Dorians or Sea Peoples and colonization, Trojan War, internal conflicts, depopulation, and great migrations as a r esult of natural disaster and unfavorable living conditions were a few but frequently

Korean War Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Korean War - Essay Example The initial cause was that at the World War of 1939-45, at the Allied Summit meeting it was decided that Korea would be given independence. Korea had been a Japanese colony since 1910. Korea was to be occupied by the Soviet Union till the 38th parallel, the division line, and USA would occupy the South. In the North, the Soviets backed a Stalinist regime under their client Kim Il-sung and created the North Korean Peoples' Army. They had the use of Russian artillery and tanks. In the South, the situation was very chaotic and resulted in the Americans backing the administration under the leadership of Syngman Rhee. The South wanted a united nation, thus they had very little artillery and tanks compared to the North. Many incidents took place along the 38th parallel but a fully fledged attack was launched by the North Korean People's Army on the 25th of June 1950. The South was much unprepared for the attack. (Micheal, 2001) Stalin was assured by Kim Il-sung that he could capture the Southern part. Stalin thought of this as an opportunity to continue the cold war without directly getting involved. This would also cause discomfort to America, which is what Stalin wanted. In the South, Syngman Rhee boasted about attacking the North in 1950, this gave the North a very good reason to invade the South before the South took any action against them. (History Central, n.d.) The Domino theory was what bothered President Truman; he thought that if one country fell to Communism the rest will too. He thought if Korea became communist it would capture Japan. In his opinion supporting South Korea would indirectly fight Communism and their competition with the USSR would finish. The American National Security Council issued a report (NSC 68) recommending that America abandon 'containment' and start 'rolling back' Communism. (Claire, n.d.) All these causes started the Korean War and resulted in the country being divided into two parts along the 38th parallel. The War was divided into five phases. In the first phase the North attacked the South and the Americans were taken aback. At this time they captured most of the South. The Americans asked for military assistance and American troops were sent in, who reinforced the Southern Army at Pusan. The second phase started right after when American General MacArthur led an army of troops at Inchon, near Seoul. The North Korean People's Army has to retreat as the General came up behind them, the South recaptured their territory. The General invaded the North on the 7th of October 1950. They captured almost up till the Chinese Border. They assumed that they would be back home by Christmas. The third phase started with this. The Chinese were threatened by this and attacked the army led by the General. The Chinese had modern weapons and a dislike for the Americans. They recaptur ed the North and advanced into the South, there were more than half a million Chinese troops involved in this attack. (Claire, n.d.) The fourth phase came with more American troops landing; this led to the American pushing back the Chinese. Many lives were lost during this time. In March 1951, the American troops reached the 38th parallel line again. The last and final phase was when the President told the General to stop; the General criticized the President and was court marshaled. In 1953 the American

Unitarian Universalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Unitarian Universalism - Essay Example It then establishes the historical and philosophical connection between Buddhism and UU. Unitarian Universalism emerged primarily from Christian roots but has drawn extensively from other beliefs and faiths, a practice that has grown to include practically all religions throughout the years. The Unitarians formed in Britain in the 1500ââ¬â¢s during the time of the Protestant Reformation, an era of religious enlightenment at least in the context of that period in history (Hamilton, 2005). The Unitarian philosophy introduced people to new ways of thinking including the concept that Jesus was only a man, not a god or the son of God. Instead they maintained, much the same as the Jewish viewpoint regarding Jesus, that he was an important prophet and teacher. Instead of blindly following the Christian or any other religious doctrine, according to the Unitarians, people should employ reasoning and reject superstition with regards to their personal spirituality. It is not only acceptable but preferable to question the authority of the church, its dogma and beliefs but their own beliefs as well. John Murray introduced Unitarianism to America in the early nineteenth century (Hamilton, 2005). His churchââ¬â¢s membership consisted predominantly of middle and upper-class intellectuals. The Universalist religion was formed during the eighteenth century based on the belief that all people, not just Christians, receive salvation and emphasized the significance of being compassionate and helping others in need. As opposed to the Unitarian Church in the U.S., Universalism was a populist movement that drew its membership more from the middle and lower-classes. However, both groups were very much alike in that they had disassociated themselves with the traditional Christian doctrines which prescribed dogmatic trials of faith. In addition, ââ¬Å"they emphasized individual freedom of personal belief, individual responsibility to synthesize

The capability of culture Essay Example for Free
The capability of culture Essay The capability of culture to transcend and influence peopleââ¬â¢s action and decision making processes remain to be seen since time in memorial. It tries to reach out into many diverse fields of study and tries to exemplify an explanation that these things are influenced by numerous perceptions, action and ideals present during a particular time frame. It is through this that culture can be argued to have a practical value or utility. In understanding this relationship, one must be keen to understand its notion. Since the term refers to the shared beliefs, ideals, and practices of groups of individuals at a given particular time, they continuously try to shape the actions of society as a whole (Klamer, 2002). One important notion that culture has a practical value because it individual actions can be interpreted using the sociological notion. People can create decision making processes that are influenced by the norms and traditions a particular group advocates (Klamer 2002). Similarly, its practical value spreads into different branches as individuals tries to perceive an understanding that though their action may have been independent and individualistic in orientation, it is a collective effort because their decisions are governed by numerous factors that are equally important and needs to be considered (Klamer, 2002). In addition, our own actions can be embodiments and catalyst for the creation of a new trend that can help to either catapult or move the idea of culture forward or backward. Our individual and collective decisions can contribute to the how we address the value of culture in our lives. Due to this, we can either contribute to the redefinition of what we perceive is the value of culture or play a part in formally establishing the link of the term in its utility and overall impact in our lives. Analysis of Priceline.com :: Internet Online Purchasing E-Commerce Essays
Analysis of Priceline.com Incomplete Paper Priceline.com (PCLN) may have been able to bring a dynamic reverse auction model to the market, but a cloud of doubt now hangs over the company's headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut. Consumer adoption has been hurt by poor Web site functionality and a rigid bidding system that locks customers into buying products such as plane tickets without any control over specific flight details. On a bullish note, the company was recently reinstated into Connecticut's Better Business Bureau after making improvements to its Web site and customer service. But the bigger problem facing Priceline is a lack of support from investors, who have driven the company's stock down 98% from its 52-week high. Executive departures and layoffs aside, the company's delayed march toward profitability and inability to scale successfully might very well exemplify a doomed model, or a solution in search of a problem. Perhaps an emphasis on price has blinded Priceline to intangibles like quality service and a satisfying experience. It's unclear whether consumers are willing to sacrifice brand and product features to save a few bucks. The announcement in early October that the company's WebHouse Club subsidiary for groceries and gas would close, was a shot heard 'round the Web and Wall Street and signaled the model might be broken. Introduction Which is the one place where you can satisfy your every need (almost every need) at your price? Be it airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, mortgages, new automobiles, or even long distance calling time. The answer would be Priceline.com. All you have to do is know your need, state your terms, and make your offer. It doesnââ¬â¢t get easier than this! Priceline.com was one of the pioneer online companies to traverse the traditional limitations of the Internet and revolutionize online purchasing. Itââ¬â¢s strategy ââ¬â letting the consumer name his/her price, and matching it with a seller who is willing to fill the demand at that price and those conditions, there by providing the required service the consumer desires. Thus Priceline.com is basically an integrated, Web-based e-marketing automated system, which was one of its kinds when it started its business in the consumer marketplace. In simple word it is the ideal middleman, who gets you what you want, wh en you want it through a unique dotcom experience. Priceline.com was formed on April 6, 1998 as a limited liability company, but looking at its potential and rapid success it was soon converted into a corporation.

Reading & Writing Habits Essay
I really donââ¬â¢t read or write that often. I have probably read about a total of ten books throughout my entire life. I usually read for about one hour of accumulated time during a day. When I read it is usually something online from websites such as ESPN.com. I read things that are interesting to my mind like sports. Some fictional pieces arenââ¬â¢t bad too. When I am reading about sports I soak up the information and stories like a sponge with water. This happens because I have loved sports since I was about five years old. I need to learn how to apply the same ability when I read things that arenââ¬â¢t interesting to me. Sometimes I will read slower and maybe even take notes so I can remember and understand boring things to me. The only time I ever write is if I am texting on my phone or typing on the computer. When I text on the phone I donââ¬â¢t use good grammar, punctuation, or spelling. The reason I write so improperly on texts is for the speed and my friends usually understand what I am saying without it having to be proper. The typing on the computer I do is usually for school so I do proof read and revise items for mistakes. When I am writing for assignments in school it isnââ¬â¢t free writing that just comes from my mind. I have to do research and put work into the writings which isnââ¬â¢t fun. I like free writing whatever is on my mind. I would like to start writing because it is something new to do. Instead of doing the same old thing when I am bored, I can write. Writing can be relaxing and it can exercise the mind. Hopefully taking an English class in college will urge me start writing and reading more books to further my skills in reading and writing. Our English teacher Dr. Roy-Davis expects us to write regularly, she writes, ââ¬Å"at least one draft or essay each we ekâ⬠(Roy-Davis). This would be huge change to me considering I donââ¬â¢t write any essays at all. If I start writing an essay every week it would most likely be about the events that happened to me during the week. Sometimes the essay might be exciting which would mean something good happened in my life. Other times I might have trouble writing something which means my week sucked. She says, ââ¬Å"writing requires disciplineâ⬠(Roy-Davis). One example is being able to sit in one place and think of sentences for long periods of time. That sounds kind of boring to me but if it helps me become a better writer I am willing to do whatever it takes. I have to set my own goals according to Dr. Roy-Davis. She suggests, ââ¬Å"four hours a week in two hour sessionsâ⬠(Roy-Davis). My time is very limited since I have a busy schedule due to work and school. I will try to start with that goal but I might have to change it if I start slacking in other things in my life. Dr. Roy-Davis states, ââ¬Å" the most important skill of writing I can teach you is readingâ⬠(Roy-Davis). I would agree that reading is very important to writing because it influences the way you write. If youââ¬â¢re a strong reader youââ¬â¢re most likely a strong writer. The more someone reads they pick up on ways to write. Their pieces will sound more articulate and professional than before they became a strong reader. Reading and writing help each other through revision. Noted in the book Ways of Reading by David Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky, ââ¬Å"once you have completed a draft of your essay, you can step back, see what you have done, and go back to work on it. Through this activity-writing and rewriting-we have seen our students become strong, active, and critical readersâ⬠(Bartholomae 4). I agree with this completely because when I first write drafts I donââ¬â¢t even realize all the grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes that I make. When I go back and revise it I take note of these mistakes and correct them. This makes me become a better reader and writer. Becoming a better reader and writer through revising allows me to be more time efficient on essays(less drafts) and the overall product(final essay) sound better when reading it. Bartholomae and Petrosky also mention that you can read with the grain or against the grain. In their book Ways of Reading, Bartholomae and Petrosky wrote ââ¬Å"To read generously, to work inside someone elseââ¬â¢s system, to see your world in some elseââ¬â¢s terms-we call this ââ¬Å"reading with the grainâ⬠â⬠(Bartholomae 10). To read against the grain, is to read critically, to turn back, to ask questions they believe might come as a surprise, to look for the limits of the authorââ¬â¢s vision, to provide alternate readings, to find examples that challenge the argument, to engage in dialogue.â⬠I tend to read with the grain, when I read sports stories I am usually in agreement with the authorââ¬â¢s piece and seeing their point of view. Same with books too, I put myself in the authorââ¬â¢s system and try to realize where they are coming from. I donââ¬â¢t read against the grain too often unless it is something that I totally disagree with. Most of the time the pieces that I read I donââ¬â¢t challenge or argue with because I tend to think the author know what he/she is talking about. Instead of challenge the author I try to see where their point of view is coming from therefore I read with the grain than against. I am willing to be more open and try to start reading against the grain though. I need to start asking ââ¬Å"whyâ⬠to some of the things I read. My whole goal is to change my reading and writing habits for the better. I want to expand my knowledge in the skills of reading and writing. By learning habits from Dr. Roy-Davis, Bartholomae, and Petrosky I can be more creative with writings and be able to read upper level material. With the habits I have had in reading and writing throughout my life I havenââ¬â¢t gotten very far in English classes. I agree with Dr. Roy-Davis, Bartholomae, and Petrosky with these new habits and I need to start following them. I am determined to change my habits to become a superior reading and writer. Analysis of Literary Devices of Jane Eyre
Analysis of the Theme of Jane Eyre and its Literary Devices Jane Eyre is an outstanding and meaningful novel which was written by Charlotte Bronte who didnââ¬â¢t have a fascinating appearance, a perfect figure and a glorious family and who had the similar fate with the heroine of the novel. The essay is focused on the first chapter, life at Gateshead, in which it tells us the little Jane Eyreââ¬â¢s miserable and menial life at Gateshead and that her cousins and Mrs. Reed treat her badly. In this chapter, the author intends to show us Jane Eyreââ¬â¢s resistance toward their torture and scolds. In order to demonstrate the motif, the author uses some gothic characters and depicts evil images of persons who bully Jane Eyre. Firstly, many gothic elements are adopted in this chapter in order to set the fundamental tone and manifest what a cruel and miserable life little Jane Eyre leads. It uses many delicate and horrified words to depict the weather, the season and some other things concerning the environment. Not only does it makes us feel that itââ¬â¢s really bad weather, but also we can feel Janeââ¬â¢s emotions and feelings at that time, upset, hopeless and so on, which will incite her resistant power. Secondly, Bronte is an expert in depicting charactersââ¬â¢ images. We can find many vivid figures in front of us via reading the chapter. Take Janeââ¬â¢s cousin, John, as an example. From the novel, we can see that Johnââ¬â¢s mother spoils and dotes on him and she satisfies his demands no matter how ridiculous they are. Because of those, he shapes a naughty, arrogant and capricious personality. Jane is a poor girl whose parents are dead, so she has to live with her aunt. John always teases and bullies her, for she is a fragile and obedient stranger in his eyes. And what is much worse is that his mother always gives a cold shoulder to little Jane. As time goes by, Johnââ¬â¢s maleficences become more and more violent. One day, little Jane canââ¬â¢t stand it and she resists. She says: ââ¬Å" you are like a murderer, you are like a slave-driver, you are like the Roman emperors. â⬠It uses metaphor and parallelism to depict a vivid figure of John in front us. Figures of speech made the image brighter and clearer. Third, the setting of the chapter is dark, miserable and depressive. At the beginning of the chapter, a cold, dark and rainy evening was presented in front of us, which give readers a depressive impression. The description sets the basic tone of the chapter and implicates the terrible environment in which little Jane live. In this chapter, the author intends to present Janeââ¬â¢s resistance to life to readers. Its dark, cold and miserable setting implicates Janeââ¬â¢s poor living condition and her fragile emotion, which hide the foreshadowing of her resistance. Also gothic elements employed in the chapter deepen the theme. And depictions of each character promote the development of the theme.

Razed to the Ground
Razed to the Ground Razed to the Ground Razed to the Ground By Simon Kewin The englishmonarchs.co.uk web site reports that many monasteries were raised to the ground by Viking raiders during the reign of King Ethelred I. But how can a monastery be raised to the ground? Although commonly seen on the web, the phrase ââ¬Å"raised to the groundâ⬠is almost always a misspelling of ââ¬Å"razed to the groundâ⬠. Whilst it is possible for something to be ââ¬Å"raisedâ⬠to the ground, it would, logically, have to be below the surface beforehand. Miners could raise ore to the ground. But when talking about a building or a city the phrase should be razed to the ground. Raze which sounds the same as raise but is a completely distinct word is defined by the Compact Oxford Dictionary as follows : raze (also rase) verb, tear down and destroy (a building, town, etc.). - ORIGIN Old French raser ââ¬Ëshave closelyââ¬â¢, from Latin radere ââ¬Ëscrapeââ¬â¢. The more familiar raise, however, is from a completely different root : verb, lift or move to a higher position or level etc. - ORIGIN Old Norse, related to REAR. As an aside, raise can also be a noun, meaning an increase in salary, although this is standard only in US English. In UK English this would be called a rise.
